A Day at the Farm!

So it has been awhile since I have been to my buddy’s farm. As with everything else we get busy and forget what is important in our life. My wife who writes for Thrive global is always saying we have to get back to basics and enjoy the simple things in life. She emailed Terry and he answered right away. We went and visited him and had a great time. We went out to eat at a nice BBQ place. We always enjoy visiting him, he is a great guy and is like a grandfather to our kids and a father/brother to me. Nunzia loves talking with him and she considers him family also. So I told him that I missed working on the farm with him and he said, there is plenty of work to do, so come out anytime, you know you are always welcomed.

So Friday, January 4, 2019 I went out to his farm and got there about 07:35. We had coffee then went out to work. The weather was around 39° we were dressed well but our hands were cold even with work gloves on. Well we tackled the job of putting up the rollers and installing the Cantilever gate. That took us about two hours. We had to left the gate and put it in place. We used the tractor and a strap and I guided it in position. Then we drove a 10′ pipe into the ground at the end where the gate will get latched. As you can see the gate supports are all well pipes at they are four feet into the ground so they are not moving. There is a cement area right in front of the gate where the motor station will go for the gate. Terry poured 21 bags of cement after he put in some strong angle iron in the ground. Yes, Terry who is much older than me man man-handled those bags himself. That is 1 ton of dry cement. I told him he should of called me. Him and I have done a lot of cement work over the years.

After that we went to the other end of his farm and started working on strapping the bottom of his fence to get it ready for the wiring we needed to do to string up fence. He wants to get it done soon so he can get cattle in there.

I really enjoyed working with Terry. He is highly intelligent, I learn a lot from him and the work is always physically demanding. My body loves the work. My new job as an IT supervisor keeps me in front of the computer all day so I do not get the exercise I need. I am going to try and get out there at least twice a month to help him with the farm and to get my workout. Terry is seventeen years older than me and I still have to work to keep up with him. KEEP MOVING TO STAY YOUNG!
